This week’s SECCC races were the conference championships being hosted by Brevard College. These races were the ultimate chance to fine tune skills in planning for Nationals.

Saturday brought along 2 events, Cross country and Dual Slalom. The XC course was among the toughest of the year with large and extended climbs along with tight, loose and steep downhills. This course required all racers’ skills to be working at their highest degree if they were to want to come away with a quality result. In both the Men’s and Women’s “A” race the winners were the same as they have been almost all season, Kerry Werner (Lees-Mcrae) and Erica Zaveta (Brevard College). Both Kerry and Erica true their dominance this season and demonstrated they were coming off great form leading into Nationals this following weekend. Zach Valdez (Brevard College) and Sarah Hill (Brevard College) came in second in their respective occasions hot on the heels of the winners of the XC.

In the afternoon was the intense and fast-paced dual slalom. The course was slick adding an additional variable in the already complicated occasion. In the men’s “A” race Lalu Ennis (Brevard College) edged away Cody Phillips (Lees-Mcrae) to bring house a solid win in the first gravity event of the weekend. Schools changed positions in the Women’s “A” race with Hailey Sarausky (Lees-Mcrae) taking win against Erica Zaveta (Brevard College).

Sunday morning brought the hardest downhill event on the SECCC diary. The steep and wet program made the racers have to tactically approach the course in a different manner than the many other events that occurred earlier in the season. Lalu Ennis ended with weekend 2 for two in the Men’s “A” race with a stellar run followed closely by teammate Mac Banner. Hailey Sarausky also established her prominence in the conference gravity events taking top spot on the podium accompanied by Sarah Hill of Brevard University.

The last and most exciting event of the weekend break, the short track was held on Brevard College’s own campus adding an extra amount of spectators with college students coming out to cheer and heckle all the cyclists participating. Kerry Werner showed everybody that his time of year was no joke and took start being trailed by Zach Valdez who has been hunting down Werner most season. While in the Women’s “A” race Erica Zaveta matched Kerry’s spectacular season adding another win with her already impressive results. The weekend break wrapped up smoothly with congrats and supportive wishes of good fortune as Nationals quickly approaches this particular coming weekend.

The SECCC conference will be well represented at nationals and are all excited to see the conference groups perform as they have been all year long.
