Marian and Colorado Mesa top groups as Collegiate Track Nationals conclude

Colorado Springs, Colo. (September 21, 2013) – Marian University and Colorado Mesa University won the team omniums on Saturday night as the 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Track Nationwide Championships came to an end at the Colorado Springs Velodrome.

Marian University successfully defended its Division I team omnium title from 2012, taking top honors for the eighth consecutive 12 months after claiming 20 top-five finishes over the weekend, including six gold medals. Grabbing second and third in the DI team omnium competition were Fort Lewis College and Lindenwood University .

In Division II, it was Colorado Mesa University to claim top honors after grabbing a handful of top-five finishes, including a silver medal in the women’s team pursuit. The U. S. Air Pressure Academy and the U. S. Military Academy were second plus third.

Climbing onto the top step of the podium for the men’s individual omnium upon Saturday night was Zack Noonan (Fort Lewis College). Among the results assisting to secure his victory were his silver medals in both the individual quest and the points race. Jessica Prinner (Midwestern State University) also claimed a well-deserved Stars-and-Stripes jersey for her win in the women’s individual omnium. Contributing to her title were her gold medals in both the individual pursuit plus points race, and her magical medal in the scratch race.

TIME TESTS


A big contributor to Marian’s overall victory was Stephanie Torres whom added a 500-meter time trial win on Saturday to the sprint gold she took on Fri night. In the time test, the particular 20-year-old posted a time of thirty-five. 919 to take the win over Mandy Marquardt (Penn State) who clocked a 36. 830. Jennifer Valente made her way to the podium again for your bronze she earned with a time of 37. 335. Torres’ Marian teammates Coryn Rivera and Elizabeth Engwis rounded out the top five with times of thirty seven. 704 and 38. 311.

The scratch race bronze went to Coryn Rivera (Marian University) while Christa Ghent (University of Colorado – Boulder) plus Elspeth Huyett (Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) rounded out fourth and 5th.


Within the men’s scratch race, sophomore Dean Haas (Fort Lewis College) took a thrilling victory after having only taken part in a few scratch races ever. Johnathan Freter (Lindenwood University), who constantly tried to break away, grabbed the magical medal while Colt Peterson (University of Colorado at Boulder) collected bronze. TEAM PURSUITS

Marian University strengthened its number-one spot in the standings during the first event from the evening session when its mens and women’s team pursuit squads defended their national titles from a year ago. In the women’s event, Allie Dragoo , Emily Elbers , Corrie Karas , and Coryn Rivera clocked a 5: 09. 471 to take the gold medal ahead of Co Mesa University and the University of Co . In the men’s event, Marian’s Zachary Carlson , Jos Chalmers , Matt Gittings , and Adam Leibovitz posted a four: 35. 084 over the four kms to beat out Fortification Lewis College plus Lindenwood University .

TEAM SPRINT

Marian University claimed yet another success when it won the final event from the night – the Mixed Group Sprint. As the last heat, the particular six-person team of Zachary Carlson , Jos Chalmers , Matt Gittings , Kaleb Koch , Coryn Rivera , and Stephanie Torres posted a time of 2: fourteen. 427 to take the win ahead of Fort Lewis College and Colorado Mesa University .
