If you expect to race with the pros & make money at it – you have two chances…slim & none. Not sarcastic – truthful. Everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) starts in the amateur ranks. No one starts as a pro. CAT 5 then CAT 4, CAT 3 etc. up to CAT 1. http://www.usacycling.org/ First you start by joining a local cycling club at your local bike shop & getting a license. http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/stor… If you can keep up with them, then try a race. Many try – few succeed. Fact of life.

To become a pro: Ride, race, win. To make money at it: Coach other cyclists, shmooze sponsors, write books about your experience. Only a very few of the very top cyclists at the top teams get significant salaries, and prize money isn’t worth writing home about, except at a very few of the top races. You better like cycling an awful lot, because its a brutal way to make a living. You see the glory of a race win on TV. You don’t see where that race was won: Cold, rainy, windy, lonely 100 mile rides in the offseason when no one’s looking.

You have to buy a license and start racing locally. You start out in cat 5 and move up from there. Work you way to to cat 1 and the next step is the pro level.http://www.usacycling.org/buy-a-license.…
