School Mountain Bike Nationals continue on Saturday with eight titles awarded

Beech Mountain, In. C. (October 26, 2013) – Eight more nationwide titles were won at the 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships on Saturday as the cross-country and downhill portions from the event took center stage.

After Saturday’s racing, Fort Lewis College holds a 32 point prospect over Lees-McRae College in the Division I team omnium standings. Within Division II, Brevard College has a strong lead, sitting 141 points ahead of Western State Colorado University. Team omniums, as well as individual omniums will be awarded on Sunday. CROSS-COUNTRY RACING

Division I Men

Chris Baddick (University of Colorado-Boulder), who seem to claimed silver in yesterday’s brief track race, made the winning move in today’s cross-country competition to claim the national title amongst division I men.

“There wasn’t a lot a winning move, ” he stated. “It was more about not producing too many mistakes. When Kerry (Werner) went down on the second lap, We didn’t have any choice but to attack. I got about 10-15 seconds on him and I put just enough pressure on him that he made a couple more mistakes and am could stay away until the end. inch

Kerry Werner (Lees-McRae College) finished in second while Kuss Sepp (University of Colorado-Boulder) collected the bronze medal. Yesterday’s short monitor winner and Baddick’s teammate Samuel Morrison (University of Colorado-Boulder) was fourth and Luke Vrouwenvelder (Lees-McRae College) had been fifth.

Division I Women

Kate Courtney (Stanford University) is absolutely putting her mark on Division I women’s racing. On Saturday, she claimed the cross-country win after taking the short track win on Friday.


Courtney finished ahead of gold medalist Lauren Catlin (Fort Lewis College) while Sofia Fomez Villafane (Fort Lewis College) took the bronze. Coryn Rivera (Marian University) and Linnea Dixson (University of Wyoming) claimed the fourth and fifth steps of the cross-country podium.

Division II Men

Zachary Valdez (Brevard College) took his 2nd national title of the weekend in division II when he additional cross-country gold to the short monitor win he achieved on Friday.

“I didn’t come in expecting a lot, inch he explained afterwards. “But We knew I had the potential to win and so I just went with it plus it worked out pretty well. ”


Valdez made the winning move in the second lap. He created a gap on the climb and held it until the end, finishing ahead of silver and bronze medalists Timothy Jenkinson (Mars Hill University) and Dylan Johnson (Brevard College). Lewis Gaffney (Brevard College) and Robert Rimmer (Virginia Intermont College) were fourth and fifth.

Division II Women

Alexis Skarda (Colorado Mesa University) rode her way to the top step from the podium in division II, adding a gold medal to the gold she took in the short monitor.

“Since there were only two laps, my plan was just to take off around the hills because hills are my strong point, ” the mature rider explained of her technique. “I was a little nervous regarding the technical section but I got the lead half way in the hill and got 10-20 mere seconds from that point on. ”


Skarda beat out second- and third-place finishers Kaysee Armstrong (King University) and yesterday’s short track champion Erica Zaveta (Brevard College) while Sarah Hill (Brevard College) and Essence Barton (California Lutheran University) rounded out the podium.

DOWNHILL RACING

Division I Men

Alex Dawson (Appalachian Condition University) clocked the fastest moments of the day in the downhill competitions to claim the win amongst department I men. With a time of two: 25. 970, Dawson beat out gold and bronze medalists Adam Digby (Fort Lewis College) and John Swanguen (Lindsey Wilson College) who posted instances of 2: 26. 291 and 2: 26. 279 respectively. Max Morgan (University of Vermont) and Joshua Patton (Lindsey Wilson College) were fourth and fifth.

Division I Women


In the division I women’s race, Rebecca Gardner (Fort Lewis College) was the just rider to break the three minute barrier, completing the course with a moments of 2: 58. 418. Descending to the silver and bronze medals had been Shayona Glynn (Marian University) and Hailey Sarausky (Lees-McRae College) with 3: twenty. 956 and 3: 25. 457. Eva Wilson (Colorado State University) and Sage Kitson (Fort Lewis College) curved out the podium.

Division II Men

Andrew Slowey (Front Variety Community College) clocked a two: 27. 765 to best Daniel Ennis (Brevard College) in the division II in a number of race. Ennis posted a two: 29. 680 to finish ahead of Mac Banner (Brevard College) who collected bronze in 2: 33. 608. The fourth and fifth steps of the podium went to Ryan Burney (Wentworth Institute of Technology) and Derek Maiden (East Tn State University).

Division II Women


Using her fourth career Stars-and-Stripes jersey was Erica Zaveta (Brevard College). Using a time of 3: 08. 401, the girl added the division II women’s downhill crown to the gold honor she won in the short monitor on Friday.

“I qualified third yesterday. It was icy and muddy but today was much warmer. I actually do much better in mud, ” the all-around rider explained. “I have got to do some racing here in the summer mainly because Beech was open so I do one race before this. I got to see the track before which was good but the mud was really good for me and am was pretty smooth with it. inch


Completing second and third behind Zaveta were Coleen Pacuraiu (US Air Pressure Academy) with a 3: 17. 669 and Essence Barton (California Lutheran University) with a 3: 20. 674. Ali Osgood (Humboldt State University) and Sarah Hill (Brevard College) rounded out fourth and fifth.

Competition may conclude on Sunday with dual slalom and team relays. The individual and team omniums will also be awarded.
